First Thing's First: What Song To Choose For Your First Dance

By Tristan Whalen-Hughes

"Listen, honey! It's OUR song!"

We often hear about these cute moments. A chance encounter on the dance floor, or perhaps at a momentous event with music in the background. Eyes meet, and the rest is history. That fateful tune becomes forevermore "our song". It's a beautiful thing.

For the vast majority of us, however, this just isn't the case. No magical melody sweeps us into a romance. No song has become a building block upon which our relationship has flourished. Still, when the big day comes, it's customary to choose a song for the newlyweds' "First Dance". Panic sets in. What to choose? How long should it be? Where to even BEGIN?!

Here is where we come in. To help you find a bit of inspiration, below are a few of our favourite songs for a wedding's First Dance. This is by no means a comprehensive list, of course. There is no wrong answer when choosing what music to play for this moment and there is a huge library of music from which to choose your perfect song. These are just a few of our suggestions that we hope will help point you in the right direction.

All of Me by John Legend

" 'Cause all of me/Loves all of you"

The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra

"There is nothing for me but to love you/And the way you look tonight"

At Last by Etta James

"And here we are in Heaven/For you are mine at last"

Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You by Frankie Valli

"You're just too good to be true/Can't take my eyes off of you"

Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley

"Take my hand/Take my whole life too/ For I can't help falling in love with you"

Everything by Michael Buble

"It's you, it's you, you make me sing/You're every line, you're every word, you're everything"

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers

"And if I grow old, well I know I'm gonna be/I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you"

You're My Best Friend by Queen

"You're my sunshine and I want you to know/That my feelings are true/I really love you"

Whatever song you choose, the most important thing for any First Dance is that the song, its melody and lyrics, speak to you as a couple. Try to hone in on a genre, tempo, and overall theme, and go from there. If you didn't have one already, you might just stumble onto your very own "our song" to carry with you in your lives together.
